Vienna with Athena Calderone

Description

Experience an insider-led exploration of Vienna through architecture, craft, and classic culture. Staying at the Michelin-starred Hotel Sacher Vienna, guests gain rare access to designers, ateliers, and historic institutions, paired with curated experiences and thoughtful meals led by design, culinary, and entertaining expert Athena Calderone, whose new house was entirely inspired by Viennese architecture. Highlights: Day 1 Stay at the storied Hotel Sacher Vienna, one of the world’s most iconic luxury hotels, synonymous with old-world elegance and Viennese charm. Toast to the beginning of the trip at the Loos American Bar, the city’s legendary cocktail bar designed by modernist architect Adolf Loos in 1908. Athena Calderone will join and introduce guests to Vienna from her perspective. Day 2 Explore the city’s historic center by foot, guided by a Viennese architect that features a curated selection of ateliers, shops, buildings, and famed coffeehouses, where the culture originated before expanding across the globe. Enjoy exclusive access to the J. & L. Lobmeyr production house, where delicate glassware has been blown, cut, engraved, and polished by hand for 200 years. Accompanied by Athena, gain private entry into the Museum of Applied Arts—the space that inspired her new N.Y.C. home—after operating hours for an intimate visit. Day 3 Take in the Secession Building, the contemporary exhibition hall that was built in 1898 after Gustav Klimt and other Austrian artists split from the academic-led Künstlerhaus (Artist House) association. The Vienna Secession movement, similar to Art Nouveau, was one of Athena’s biggest sources of inspiration for her new home. Sample the food stalls at Naschmarkt, Vienna’s oldest open-air market and one of the most vibrant places in the city. Attend a classical music concert by the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra while dressed to the nines at one of the city’s world-renowned theaters. Day 4 Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Wachau Valley, which is celebrated for its terraced vineyards and winding courses of the Danube River. Meander through the vineyards at Domäne Wachau to the neighboring town for a fresh lunch at Loibnerhof. Dine at the iconic Zum Schwarzen Kameel and revel in a superlative version of the city’s most famous dish: wienerschnitzel.
